Description
Pair of Italian Baroque Walnut Demi-Lune Console Tables, circa 1660-1680
With a sobriety and a serenity of line, these tables are perhaps the most authentic form of Italian Baroque period furniture. The walnut demi-lunes feature a semi-circular top, straight canted legs and simply scrolled carved triangular legs and cross stretcher. They boast great character, revealing incredible age and patina. Hand-carved from rich walnut, the tables display the deep, warm tones of the wood, which have been preserved and enriched over centuries. The table's commanding presence can complement both traditional and contemporary décor, providing a conversation piece that bridges the past with the present. They can serve as a practical surface for displaying art or floral arrangements but also as a stunning piece of historical art and sculpture. The tables grandeur and distinctive Baroque aesthetic make them a compelling choice for those looking to infuse their home with a sense of timeless luxury and artistic heritage.
At a time when furniture was highly prized and expensive and most often used exclusively by the noble class; practicality governed the structure where tables like this could be transported very easily for variations of use. The tables can be used in two different ways: as a pair of demi-lunes against a wall or joined together to form a center table. One of the tables has a round hole towards the end which most likely was used to hold a candle. The initials AGC are carved into one of the table legs and are likely from the nobleman who commissioned the pieces.
