Description
This extraordinary Brutalist cocktail table, designed by the renowned Dutch artist Paul Kingma in the 1980s, is a striking example of his signature style, which masterfully combines raw textures, earthy materials, and modernist forms. Known for his sculptural approach to furniture, Kingma’s work celebrates the beauty of natural materials, turning functional objects into art.
The top of the table features an intricate composition of stone inlays, accented by metal details, all meticulously arranged in an abstract yet geometrically unified pattern. The use of materials such as slate, copper, coins, and bronze gives the table a distinctly tactile and naturalistic appeal, embodying the Brutalist ethos of embracing and transforming raw, unrefined elements. The varying textures and earthy tones create a harmonious yet dynamic visual interplay, with a wide array of warm yet muted earth tones singing alongside one another, with subtle yellows, greens, reds, and metallic radiance. The base follows a curvilinear S form in two bold sections rendered in textural stone with bronze cylindrical fittings holding all together.
A unique feature of this table is its articulating design, allowing for flexibility and adaptability in arrangement. Each of the articulating top surfaces are attached to swivel functions asymmetrically, meaning the width of the table will gracefully expand or contract depending on how the tops are swiveled. This provides both aesthetic intrigue and practical utility, making this table a centerpiece that is as functional as it is artistic.
Paul Kingma is celebrated for crafting pieces that are timeless, robust, and deeply inspired by nature — and this table is no exception. It’s an excellent addition to interiors with Brutalist, Mid-Century Modern, or Industrial influences. Whether placed in a living room or studio space, this table is a conversation-starting focal point. Signed on the top surface by the artist, and in Excellent Vintage Condition.
