Description
This rare pair of side or bedside tables, designed by Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen and produced by France & Son in Denmark during the 1960s, exemplifies the clarity and craftsmanship that define mid-century Scandinavian design. Known for their collaborative work that fused artisanal detailing with functional minimalism, Hvidt and Mølgaard-Nielsen created pieces that continue to resonate for their refinement and durability.
Constructed from richly figured rosewood, these tables display a deep, lustrous grain with natural variations that add visual depth and warmth to their restrained forms. The rosewood surfaces have developed a subtle patina over time, enhancing the organic character of the material while preserving its elegance. The tabletops are shaped with gently rounded corners and feature slightly raised lips along the shorter edges—a discreet functional detail that prevents items from slipping off, while also adding a sculptural nuance to the overall profile.
Each table includes a single, seamlessly integrated drawer tucked beneath the tabletop. The drawer fronts are devoid of visible handles or hardware, maintaining the tables’ clean lines and quiet presence. These drawers offer modest storage, ideal for bedside or occasional use, and their precise fit reflects the attention to detail in both the design and construction.
The frames rest on slender, tapered legs joined by horizontal crossbars, which contribute to the visual lightness and structural integrity of the design. The joinery is carefully executed, with visible finger joints at the corners that underscore the craftsmanship and provide subtle ornamentation. The proportions are well considered, with a balanced relationship between the tabletop and supporting elements that reinforces the simplicity and harmony of the form.
Measuring 75 cm in width, 50 cm in depth, and 54 cm in height (approximately 29.5 inches wide, 19.7 inches deep, and 21.3 inches high), the tables are appropriately scaled for use in a variety of settings—as nightstands, sofa end tables, or elegant standalone accent pieces.
Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen were among the most respected Danish designers of the mid-20th century. Their designs, often executed in partnership with high-quality manufacturers like France & Son, reflect a meticulous approach to structure and proportion, often blending traditional cabinetmaking techniques with modern production methods. France & Son was instrumental in the international success of Danish design during this period, known for its emphasis on technical precision and the use of premium materials.
This pair of side tables remains in excellent vintage condition, with light wear consistent with age and use. The rosewood retains its vibrant surface, and the joints remain solid and stable. These pieces offer a rare opportunity to acquire a finely balanced combination of function and form, embodying the enduring appeal of Scandinavian modernism through understated elegance and honest construction.
