Description
Philip and Kelvin LaVerne, Rare and Important 'Xiang Shi' Dining Table, Bronze, USA, 1960s
A very rare and important 'Xiang Shi' dining table designed and produced by Philip (1907-1987) and Kelvin LaVerne (1937-2025). This monumental table is one of the finest examples ever available on the worldwide secondary decorative arts marketplace. The piece features the duo's signature highly detailed, patinated and engraved bronze and pewter over wood with hand-painted enamels; engraved facsimile signature 'Philip + Kelvin LaVerne' present on the table top.
The Xiang Shi appears to be a custom or highly limited production work, and the example offered here is unusually large (over 11 feet long) with direct provenance from the artists. Those factors generally support values above many standard LaVerne dining tables.
Height: 30 inches, Width: 132.25 inches, Depth: 47 3/8 inches
Engraved bronze and pewter over wood; United States c. 1960s
This example incorporates the leg structure that has parallels with a custom table commissioned by Fred and Edith Horowitz in conjunction with a Xiang-Shi top.
Provenance: Philip and Kelvin Laverne, New York; Private Collection, California (acquired from the above, 1974)
Literature: Evan Lobel with Kelvin Laverne, 'Alchemy: The Art of Philip and Kelvin Laverne', Pointed Leaf Press, 2024, p. 84, 125 (model variants illustrated) -
