Description
The 'LAKES' coffee tables collection comprises a series of four tables, each taking the geographic silhouette of a different lake as its shape. The study begins by examining the various maps available online, through the Swiss Geological Administration, offering a view not visible on a day-to-day basis. Relevant to each piece is the creation of a canvas of static versus dynamic forces, examining void and materiality rhythmically shaping space: a modern representation of the tectonic folds of entire landscapes and the hidden depths of an unseen subterranean universe.
The artist Philip Michael Wolfson's unique approach to functional sculpture, design and art is informed by the vigorous dynamics resulting from the fracture and fragmentation of form – layering and manipulating both 2 and 3-dimensional studies into fluid shapes and forms, where the movement of light, shadow and reflection is an integral part of the seduction of the work. The works constantly evolve between static and dynamic models, shifting from objects and installations to purely artistic examination. Wolfson is prospecting new visual territories in the field of narrative object & space.
