Description
A large conference table known as the "Committee table" from the Palace of Assembly in Chandigarh by Pierre Jeanneret, circa 1963. A beautiful table in teak with crossed legs with a V motif, joined at the bottom by two cross-pieces. The V motif was often used in the works of Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret, in furniture as well as the load-bearing structures of the buildings in Chandigarh.
In 1950 the world renowned architect Le Corbusier was asked to design the capital of the states of Haryana and Punjab in the newly independent India. Le Corbusier designed the master plan and a number of buildings. Pierre Jeanneret, his cousin, served as the site architect and was responsible for all the furniture, or 'Equipment' as Le Corbusier preferred to call it. For this project they stepped away from mass produced steel and relied on the skills of local craftsmen. Jeanneret also designed several buildings for the city and the furniture for many projects, including the Palace of Assembly and the High Court. -
