Description
Portuguese Rosewood Library Table
Mid-19th Century
The solid rosewood top formed from a single plank with a gadrooned edge above two drawers with raised cushion fronts framed by intricate dentil molding, the reverse with matching false drawers allowing the table to float elegantly within a room. Raised on exuberantly turned legs joined by a deep barley-twist box stretcher terminating in boldly turned feet.
What distinguishes the table is the extraordinary energy of the turning throughout. Portuguese furniture of the 19th century often embraced a sculptural boldness absent from much contemporary English work, and this example displays that character particularly well. The heavily modeled legs, dense turning, and vigorous barley-twist stretcher give the piece a strong architectural presence while still retaining refinement and balance.
The rosewood itself is especially appealing, displaying rich color and lively figuring throughout. The use of a single plank top further contributes to the table’s visual strength and sense of craftsmanship. Equally successful from all sides, the table was clearly intended to stand freely within an interior rather than against a wall. -
