Description
Rectangular games table with an inset chessboard veneered in alternating light and dark woods within a border of oyster veneer enclosed by rounded corners. Raised on a ring-turned pedestal above three downswept legs terminating in bun feet, each leg inlaid along its upper surface with alternating oyster veneer panels.
Oyster veneer, produced by slicing small branches or roots across the grain, became established in English furniture during the late seventeenth century and continued to appear in selected decorative work through the Regency period. The distinctive concentric growth rings reveal the natural figure of the timber, making each section unique. Here the oyster veneer provides a contrast to the geometric chessboard while repeating along the legs to unify the design.
The table retains an honest surface with wear consistent with age and use.
