Description
An Incredible gravity-defying coffee table designed by Ronald Schmitt produced by Team Form for in the 1970s. This is Ronald Schmitt's most iconic design. The base of this table is made from solid Carrera marble and is extremely heavy. The table was made in Switzerland and designed in Germany, rare to see in the United States.
The thick oval glass top lays loose on the marble base only held in to place by a chromed metal clip. The oval plate glass is 19mm.
The marble veins are soft waves of vanilla white, creamy beige, and light grey This piece has such a dramatic profile and is sure to be a show stopper in any home.
Tiny pin-chip in the glass (pictured). Some light scratching on the glass top. Overall the glass is in very good condition and presents well.
Dimensions 51"L x 16.5"H x 39"W
About the designer:
In 1958 at the age of 28, Ronald Schmitt, who did his apprenticeship at the renowned furniture manufacturer Thonet, quit his job as a commercial clerk and, along with his wife Ingeborg, ventured into self-employment.
It wasn’t easy at the beginning, but with 3,000 Deutsche Marks in their pocket and a Fiat 600 to call their own, the Schmitt's dared to take the plunge into self-employment. In a small workshop, the two of them produced mosaic coffee tables. The young company was able to make good use of Ingeborg Schmitt’s professional and technically sound skills as a dental technician, and the ambitious company grew and grew.
The breakthrough came in 1962 when the first coffee tables with a 19-mm crystal glass top were presented at the Frankfurt Fair. Glass was en vogue at the time, and Ronald Schmitt seized the opportunity early on to specialize in glass and metal. The Swiss manufacture Team Form put Schmitt's vision into reality with the unique cantilevered K- 1000 glass and sloping marble coffee table.
An icon was born – K 1000, is still a modern classic today. -
