Description
A very rare wooden side or coffee table attributed to Runnar Engblom for C.J. Boman, Finland, in the period 1938-40. The table top is decorated with a plant motif intarsia attributed to Birger Kaipiainen. Marked by Boman underneath.
Helge Runar Engblom (1908–1965) was a Finnish designer and interior architect. He studied furniture design at the Academy of Arts and Crafts 1925-1929 and painting at the Finnish Art Association's drawing school 1933-1936. After that, Engblom shared a studio with Tove Jansson and a couple of his fellow students. In the 1930s, he worked as a furniture designer for Asko and Boman. Many of his works were on display at the Finnish stand at the Paris World's Fair in 1937 and at the New York World's Fair in 1939.
Birger Johannes Kaipiainen (1915 – 1988) was one of the most successful Finnish ceramists and designers. His work was strongly inspired by nature and he often used stylized depictions of flowers, fruits and birds to decorate his work. Most of his work was for the Finnish ceramics company Arabia. -
