Description
Description:
A masterclass in sculptural Brazilian modernism, this exceptional coffee table by Giuseppe Scapinelli embodies the designer's singular ability to merge Italian elegance with the untamed beauty of Brazil's native hardwoods. Created in São Paulo during the 1950s, the piece reflects Scapinelli's unmistakable design language—where graceful movement, impeccable craftsmanship, and architectural precision coexist in perfect harmony.
The table is defined by an elegantly elongated oval frame that appears to float above an intricate sculptural base. Four sweeping, organically curved legs rise effortlessly from the floor before intersecting through a series of flowing stretchers, creating a composition that feels simultaneously engineered and poetic. Every curve transitions seamlessly into the next, giving the piece a remarkable sense of rhythm and visual lightness despite its substantial construction. Viewed from any angle, the table reveals a different interplay of lines, making it as captivating as a sculpture as it is functional furniture.
Crafted in richly figured Brazilian caviúna, the wood displays extraordinary character developed over more than seven decades. Its deep cognac-brown foundation is animated by dramatic black veining, amber highlights, and warm honey undertones that have acquired a luminous patina through age. The natural oxidation of the timber has softened its original color into a refined, satin glow, enhancing the remarkable depth and movement of the grain. Caviúna—celebrated for its density, durability, and expressive figure—becomes an active design element, lending the table a warmth and richness impossible to replicate.
The original glass top allows uninterrupted appreciation of the sculptural wooden framework beneath, emphasizing transparency, balance, and the remarkable technical complexity of Scapinelli's construction. This dialogue between weightless glass and expressive hardwood exemplifies the optimism of postwar Brazilian modernism, where craftsmanship and innovation were celebrated equally.
An Italian émigré who became one of the defining voices of Brazilian furniture design, Giuseppe Scapinelli infused European sophistication with the exuberance of Brazil's materials and organic forms. This coffee table beautifully captures that union—romantic Italian refinement expressed through the sensual curves, dramatic grain, and vibrant spirit of Brazilian caviúna.
Increasingly sought after by collectors worldwide, sculptural works by Scapinelli of this caliber are becoming exceptionally scarce. Both an important example of mid-century Brazilian design and a timeless sculptural centerpiece, this table stands as one of the most expressive achievements of the period. | Depth: 22 in -
