Description
This walnut wood table, made in Italy by Bernini and designed by Silvio Coppola in the 1960s, embodies the rich tradition of Italian craftsmanship. Coppola, an architect and urban planner with a distinct design style, has created a piece where wood takes the spotlight. The smooth surfaces of the table highlight the natural beauty of the wood, with the grain pattern displaying the signature flame effect typical of Italian walnut.
The table’s solid, substantial base is joined by a stretcher, reminiscent of the traditional Italian “fratina” table, a piece often central to spaces meant for gathering and hospitality. The tabletop, made from thick wood, appears slightly lifted from the base, giving a sense of balance and lightness to the otherwise bold design. The visible joints, carefully crafted, are not only structural but also serve as decorative details, showcasing the meticulous craftsmanship of the piece.
At the center of the table lies a discreet, pull-out tray, a surprising and practical feature. The tray is equipped with crescent-shaped cutouts that act as handles—small, minimalist details that enhance the table’s design. If used as a desk or workstation, these cutouts could even serve as cable pass-throughs, providing functionality for modern use.
The large, robust supports of the table harmonize with the overall design, conveying a sense of strength and presence. True to Coppola’s style, the piece communicates solidity and an architectural boldness. While his designs are often linked to the brutalist movement, when applied to furniture, they are softened, blending strength with a sense of warmth and reassurance in domestic settings.
