Description
From the artist's web site:
Tom Corbin’s path to art was anything but linear. After earning a marketing degree from Miami University, he began his career in sales and then advertising—a direction shaped by parental influences in both art and engineering. Corbin followed a traditional path until a chance invitation to a sculpture class altered everything. That fortuitous moment would mark the beginning of a lifetime immersed in the arts.
Beginning in 1986, Tom’s career as a sculptor was marked by figurative sculpture, commissioned busts and statues rendered realistically, essentially three-dimensional portraits in bronze. Within three years, he was modeling limited-edition sculptures that were much more impressionistic and expressive, setting the stage for an ever-evolving body of work.
A pivotal moment came in 2008, when Corbin relocated his studio to a restored 1912 firehouse in the Rosedale neighborhood of Kansas City, Kansas. This historic space serves not only as his flagship atelier but also as a crucible for experimentation and growth. Corbin describes this period as his “most prolific and explorative,” characterized by formal innovation, material expansion, and conceptual breadth. Freed from previous constraints, he began incorporating nonobjective sculpture, painting, and expanded functional designs into his practice.
Today, Corbin’s oeuvre includes both figurative and abstract works—Columns, Totems, Rings, stylized furnishings, and paintings—works that defy categorization yet remain unified by their emotional gravity, compositional strength, and commitment to enduring craftsmanship. Each piece is meticulously finished and reflective of his dedication to process, imagination, and permanence.
Tom’s art can be found in museums, private collections, designer showrooms and numerous public installations across the United States and abroad. Among his most prominent achievements is the bronze monument of President Harry S. Truman, installed in the Rotunda of the United States Capitol. Fittingly, a second edition of this presidential sculpture was subsequently installed in Brussels to commemorate the 75th anniversary of NATO. These monumental works underscore Corbin’s capacity to convey narrative, dignity, and resonance on a public scale.
While the path over the span of four decades may have been unconventional, what unites the broad and diverse Corbin catalogue is the singular approach of the artist himself. Tom’s disciplined and precise dedication to his craft enables the inspiration of each piece to flourish and carve its own niche within a continually evolving body of work. -
