Description
Chestnut wood occasional table with two drawers, crafted by Valzania in 1938, designed by Paolo Buffa for Casa A. in Cunardo (VA), Italy.
With its clean and elegant lines, this occasional table epitomizes Paolo Buffa's aesthetic pursuits in the late 1930s, successfully bridging the stylistic elements of Art Deco with more contemporary influences. By minimizing decorative aspects, Buffa's design emphasizes the balance of proportions and the natural prominence of the wood. The tabletop, made of chestnut, was chosen for its rich arabesque grain, creating a harmonious and pleasing texture.
This small desk is ideal for creating a compact study area or as a decorative console paired with a mirror. This piece, along with others, was part of a specific commission in 1938, designed by Paolo Buffa to furnish a private residence in Cunardo, near Varese, Italy. Owning an authentic Buffa piece today preserves the connection between antique and contemporary design that is evident throughout the Italian designer's work.
Born in 1903, Paolo Buffa studied at the Polytechnic University of Milan and collaborated with Gio Ponti and Emilio Lancia before establishing his own design studio. Focusing mainly on luxury furniture design, he contributed to the interiors of some of the most beautiful homes in Milan. The presented table features the Valzania label in enameled brass, certifying its origin from a manufacturer dedicated to producing original models designed by Buffa.
