Description
Italian glamour meets architectural rigour in this sculptural dining table, designed by Willy Rizzo for Jean Charles in the 1970s. Its strong geometric silhouette, paired with natural travertine and warm brass detailing, reflects the designer’s distinctive fusion of material elegance and modernist clarity.
Design
The top is crafted from creamy beige travertine, its surface subtly textured and framed with a slim inlay of solid brass. The tabletop’s gently trapezoidal outline offers a softened angularity, while its generous scale invites use for both dining and conversation. Beneath, a monolithic pedestal base anchors the piece. Composed of vertically ribbed travertine panels, the base curves with quiet rhythm, ending in a recessed plinth clad in brass, a thoughtful elevation that lightens its visual weight. This combination of vertical fluting and curving volume is characteristic of Jean Charles designs, which often explored a dialogue between Brutalist form and decorative finish.
Though best known for his furniture creations celebrating the jet-set lifestyle of the era, Rizzo approached each design with architectural discipline. This table is a strong example of his collaboration with Jean Charles, whose French ateliers produced many of Rizzo’s more sculptural works. The materials are not only luxurious but also enduring, contributing to the timeless character of the piece.
The table is signed with 'Jean Charles'.
Condition
In good vintage condition withsigns of age. Minor surface wear to the travertine and subtle patina on the brass edging, consistent with its period. -
