Description
Gabriella Crespi’s work blurs the line between sculpture and utility, often achieving a harmony between architectural clarity and material warmth. This early table lamp, produced in her Roman studio at Monte de’ Cenci, is a distilled example of that approach.
Design
A cube of walnut burl forms the base, its surface animated by organic burls and swirling grain patterns that catch and reflect the light. A fine inlay defines the upper plane, subtly reinforcing the lamp’s geometric character. From its centre rises a cylindrical brass fitting with a warm golden tone, understated yet grounding. The contrast between the organic tactility of the burl wood and the cool rigour of the brass highlights Crespi’s sensitivity to texture and proportion.
The lamp bears the original label, “Gabriella Crespi Monte de Cenci Roma,” linking it directly to her first studio in the Palazzo Cenci, a historic building in the heart of Rome where her earliest and most poetic designs took shape.
Each element in the design reflects an intuitive understanding of balance, neither overly ornamental nor severe. A rare piece with strong provenance and visual restraint.
Condition
The condition is very good, with a well-preserved surface and natural patina to the brass. Minor signs of use consistent with age. The shade is not original. -
