This necklace is in the form known as the squash blossom design. The figure in the center is a bird, most probably a thunderbird. The thunderbird represents the balance of nature as well as power, including being able to influence the weather.

This necklace was made out of an old battery casing along with bakelite (red and possible the white), bone, clam shell. It is strung on string, which was a common way to string these necklaces. The string appears to be in stable condition.

There is a charm to older squash blossom necklaces. This example certainly exudes that charm.
