Burma No-Heat Ruby Three Stone Ring

$ 47,500
  • Description
    Dating from the Edwardian period, circa 1905, this Burma no-heat ruby and diamond ring, accompanied by a report from AGL, is set in platinum-topped 18K gold. The classic three stone ring centers a sugarloaf cabochon ruby weighing approximately 3.30 carats, flanked by old European-cut diamonds, weighing approximately 1.01 and 1.12 carats, with millegrain accents and open gallery. Mounted with a rare unheated Burma ruby, this glamorous period ring of great delicacy is bursting with vivd color and white light.

    Size: 8 (this ring can be sized; please contact the gallery for further information)
    Materials: 1 sugarloaf cabochon ruby (approximate total weight 3.30 carats); 2 old European-cut diamonds (weighing approximately 1.01 and 1.12 carats, color and clarity I/J and VS/SI); platinum topped 18k gold
    Gram Weight: 3.1 g.

    In addition to diamonds, the 17th century Hugenot trader Jean-Baptiste Tavernier was a connoisseur of rubies. In his memoirs of his travels to the East and India, he noted that rubies appeared in Burmese gem gravels alongside fossilized bones of ancient animals. Noting their rarity in comparison to diamonds, Tavernier recorded that ruby's price per carat increased exponentially with each incremental step up in carat weight. Even in the ancient world, rubies were highly prized, as emphasized by the Proverb concerning wisdom, which emphasizes its value against the most incomparable known gemstone: "The price of wisdom is beyond rubies."
