Black Hawk Weathervane

Sold Sold
  • Description
During the last quarter of the 19th century, most New England weathervane makers, including Harris, Cushing and Sons, and others, created a form based on the Morgan horse, Black Hawk. Morgans dominated the horse industry in the mid-19th century, and Black Hawk was famed for his speed and elegant style. He sired the world champion trotter Ethan Allen, and, in the 1850s, these two rival “father and son” stallions were shown at most Midwestern state fairs with great success; their popularity resulted in the demand for Morgan horses. This example is more finely detailed than most other Black Hawk weathervanes.
