H.W. Klein
Norwegian, 1919
Henry Walter (H.W.) Klein (1919–1991) was a Norwegian-born designer and master cabinetmaker who became one of the defining figures of Danish mid-century modern furniture. Born in Norway in 1919, Klein’s early academic interests were in language and mathematics, but his life took a creative turn during World War II when he served in the Royal Norwegian Navy and developed a passion for woodworking. After the war, he trained as a cabinetmaker and pursued further studies in interior design at the Frederiksberg Tekniske Skole in Denmark. Under the mentorship of Finn Juhl, a leading figure of the Danish modern movement, Klein refined his understanding of form, function, and craftsmanship—principles that would later define his career.
In 1952, after completing his studies, Klein returned to Norway to open his own design practice. Around this period, he invented an innovative process for producing plastic furniture, selling the patent rights to leading manufacturers such as Fritz Hansen and Bramin. His inventive spirit and technical precision positioned him as a designer who successfully merged artistry with industrial innovation.
By 1960, Klein had relocated permanently to Denmark, joining Bramin Furniture as chief designer. His work during this time is celebrated for its sculptural lines, balanced proportions, and focus on comfort. Using fine materials such as teak and rosewood, he created a collection of timeless furniture pieces, including sideboards, dining tables, and lounge chairs. Among his most recognizable designs is the H.W. Klein swivel lounge chair, a piece that perfectly captures his dedication to craftsmanship, ergonomic design, and understated elegance.
Klein remained with Bramin until the company closed in the 1980s, continuing to design furniture that embodied the Danish modern philosophy of simplicity and utility. Later in life, he moved to San Francisco, where he expanded his design portfolio to include sofas and other pieces tailored to the American market. His work continued to reflect the same meticulous attention to detail and refined aesthetic that characterized his earlier creations.
H.W. Klein passed away in San Francisco in 1991, leaving behind a legacy of innovation and timeless design. Today, his furniture remains highly sought after by collectors and design enthusiasts worldwide, representing the perfect blend of Norwegian craftsmanship and Danish modern sensibility that defined an era.
