Norman Kanter

American, 1926 - 2010
Norman Kanter, a trailblazing abstract painter, established his artistic roots in the vibrant Tribeca neighborhood of New York City, where he settled in 1959. His artistry flourished within a studio on Chambers Street until his passing. Originating from West Virginia, Kanter earned his degree from Berkeley in 1956, maintaining professional connections to the West Coast throughout his illustrious career.

Beyond his East Coast endeavors, Kanter accepted visiting artist appointments in the Bay Area, contributing to institutions such as UC Berkeley and the California College of Arts and Crafts. He also forged ties with the influential Dilexi Gallery in San Francisco.

During the late 1950s, Kanter actively worked and exhibited in Provincetown, while in New York, his art graced the walls of numerous galleries, with Martha Jackson being a notable venue. Sharing his knowledge, Kanter imparted his artistic wisdom at institutions such as Pratt and NYC Technical College.

Norman Kanter's artistic journey was adorned with prestigious accolades, including a Fulbright in 1956, an Adolph and Esther Gottlieb Foundation grant in 1986, and recognition from the Pollock/Krasner Foundation in 1990. Following his passing, his estate finds representation through both McCormick Gallery in Chicago and Vincent Vallarino Fine Art in New York. A comprehensive catalog featuring illustrations from the September 2013 exhibition is readily available.
