Liberty & Co.
Founded in 1875 by Arthur Lasenby Liberty, Liberty & Co. quickly became a leading name in artistic design, renowned for its unique fusion of global influences and progressive British craftsmanship. Originally an emporium for imported Oriental goods, the company evolved into a powerhouse of the Arts and Crafts movement, offering furniture, textiles, and decorative objects that brought artistic sensibility into the home.
At the heart of Liberty’s furniture legacy was Leonard Wyburd, who led the in-house design studio from the 1880s. Wyburd’s furniture—characterized by handcrafted quality, medieval motifs, and vernacular simplicity—helped define what would become known as the “Liberty Style.” Through its catalogues, exhibitions, and collaborations with key designers and craftspeople, Liberty not only responded to the shifting tastes of the late Victorian and Edwardian periods but actively shaped them.
Combining aesthetic innovation with commercial savvy, Liberty & Co. made artful living accessible to a new middle class and left a lasting legacy in British design. Today, their Arts and Crafts furniture remains highly collectible and widely admired for its timeless beauty and craftsmanship.
