Martin Hall & Co.

Martin Hall & Co. was a British silverware manufacturer that operated from 1863 to 1936. The company was founded by Martin Hall, a Sheffield-born silversmith who had worked for his father's silverware business before striking out on his own.
 
Under Hall's leadership, Martin Hall & Co. quickly became one of the leading silverware manufacturers in England, known for its high-quality products and innovative designs. The company produced a wide range of silverware, including tableware, candlesticks, and other decorative objects, and became known for its use of electroplating, a process that allowed for the mass production of silver-plated items.
 
In addition to producing its own designs, Martin Hall & Co. also worked with prominent artists and designers of the time, such as Christopher Dresser and Charles Robert Ashbee, to create innovative and stylish silverware. The company also acquired several other silverware manufacturers over the years, including John Round & Son and Elkington & Co.
 
In the early 20th century, Martin Hall & Co. faced increasing competition from overseas manufacturers and struggled to maintain its position in the market. In 1936, the company was acquired by one of its competitors, Henry Wigfull & Co., and its operations were eventually absorbed into the larger firm.
 
Despite its relatively short lifespan, Martin Hall & Co. is remembered as an important player in the history of British silverware, and its products are highly sought after by collectors today.
