William Tillyer

British, 1938

William Tillyer, a renowned British painter and watercolourist, has been a celebrated figure in the art world since the 1970s. Born in Middlesbrough, Tillyer's artistic journey began at the Middlesbrough College of Art, and he later honed his skills at London's prestigious Slade School of Fine Art.

Throughout his career, Tillyer has been a trailblazer, producing experimental work that challenges conventional notions of the relationship between art and the world, and humanity's connection to nature. In the 1970s, he made a significant return to printmaking, infusing it with newfound vitality. Employing various techniques, from etching to five-tone screenprinting, Tillyer created intricate lattices described by Pat Gilmour as 'a cool and unpeopled world...in which to reflect the surrounding flux of nature.'

Tillyer's artistic exploration has transcended borders, with international projects in locations such as Cadiz, Spain; Tobago, Republic of Trinidad and Tobago; Count Kerry, Ireland, for the Cill Rialaig Project; and Melbourne, Australia. His influence has extended beyond creating art to shaping minds, as seen in his roles as a visiting professor at institutions like Brown University in the United States, the Bath Academy of Art, and the Chelsea School of Art.

With a global footprint, Tillyer's works have been exhibited internationally, and his art finds a home in the collections of major institutions. Notable mentions include the Brooklyn Museum and Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Art Gallery of Western Australia in Perth, the Arts Council Collection, the Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art, and esteemed institutions like Tate and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Explore the captivating world of William Tillyer, where art becomes a conduit for probing questions and a reflection of the ever-changing dance of nature.
