William Tillyer
British, 1938
William Tillyer, a celebrated British painter and watercolourist, has captivated the art world since the 1970s. Born in Middlesbrough, Tillyer's artistic journey commenced at Middlesbrough College of Art, followed by London's prestigious Slade School of Fine Art.
Throughout his illustrious career, Tillyer has pushed boundaries, creating experimental works that defy conventional notions of art-world relationships and humanity's interconnectedness with nature. In the 1970s, he made a notable foray into printmaking, injecting it with a fresh vibrancy. Utilizing a spectrum of techniques, from etching to five-tone screenprinting, Tillyer crafted intricate lattices described by Pat Gilmour as 'a cool and unpeopled world...in which to reflect the surrounding flux of nature.'
Tillyer's artistic odyssey has traversed global landscapes, from Cadiz, Spain to Tobago, Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, from Count Kerry, Ireland for the Cill Rialaig Project to Melbourne, Australia. Beyond his creative endeavors, Tillyer's impact has been felt in academic realms, serving as a visiting professor at esteemed institutions like Brown University in the United States, the Bath Academy of Art, and the Chelsea School of Art.
With a worldwide presence, Tillyer's works have graced international exhibitions and found permanent homes in the collections of prestigious institutions. Notable mentions include the Brooklyn Museum and Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Art Gallery of Western Australia in Perth, the Arts Council Collection, the Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art, and esteemed establishments like Tate and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Dive into the mesmerizing realm of William Tillyer, where art becomes a vehicle for probing inquiries and a mirror reflecting nature's ever-evolving dance.
