Provenance: Descended in the Townsend family of Raynham Hall on Long Island, New York and signed on the stretcher with the family name; to two members of the family in Orange County, New York; Ginsburg & Levy, Inc., New York; Bernard & S. Dean Levy, Inc., New York.
Reference: The sofa relates closely to another New York example in the Beekman parlor at Philipsburg Manor, Sleepy Hollow Restorations, illustrated in Helen Comstock American Furniture, number 529. -
