Hugh Acton
American
Hugh Acton (born 1925) is an American mid‑century furniture designer, artist and inventor whose work bridges architectural precision with inventive form. Trained at the Cranbrook Academy of Art and later contributing to the GM Technical Center, Acton launched his own design firms in the 1950s, achieving early success with the now‑iconic 1954 Bench in slatted wood and brass. In 1976 he introduced the commercially enduring “Acton Stacker” chair — a steel and polypropylene stacking seat first produced by American Seating. Throughout his career, Acton’s work embraced industrial materials, sculptural geometry and functional elegance, earning him recognition among designers, architects and modern furniture collectors.
