Description
Chinese Blanc de Chine Dehua porcelain Budai or Pu-tai with an open-mouthed smile, holding prayer beads and cloth sack standing on a grassy mount. He is usually identified with or seen as an incarnation of Maitreya, the future Buddha. He is almost always shown smiling or laughing, hence his nickname in Chinese, the Laughing Buddha. The kilns of Dehua, in Fujian Province in southeast China, began producing brilliant white porcelain in the thirteenth century.
