Antique Caucasian Sumak

$ 12,500
  • Description
    A beautiful antique flat-weave from the Caucasus, woven in the intricate "sumak" brocading technique, in very pleasing colors. The three large eight-pointed star medallions are distinct and very richly detailed. Caucasian sumaks like this display a very sophisticated aesthetic, inherited from earlier weaving traditions of this prolific region. They were prestigious floor coverings, often commissioned by wealthy local patrons.

    The present example is in very good state of preservation, showing gentle wear that only enhances its beauty. After minor repairs, it is structurally sturdy.
