Description
This early version of the Cloud armchair by Jacques Jarrige, created in 2012, marks the origin of a form that would go on to become one of the artist’s most emblematic and evolving sculptural designs. Unlike his later carved pieces, this unique armchair was hand-cut from layered MDF—an approach that highlights Jarrige’s intuitive process and experimental spirit during this formative period of his work.
Composed of stacked MDF sheets, the chair was shaped by cutting directly into the material—an additive process that allowed Jarrige to sketch in space and define the form through gesture rather than traditional joinery. The result is a dynamic, sculptural seat with smooth contours and bold openings. Two symmetrical oval voids pierce the armrests, creating a sense of openness and movement while echoing the artist’s continued fascination with negative space.
Finished in a deep black stain that enhances the form without concealing the surface, the chair has a restrained yet powerful presence. The seat is upholstered in leather, adding comfort and a tactile contrast to the geometric form. Though compact in scale, the armchair radiates a sense of poise and balance—inviting both use and contemplation.
In 2025, Jarrige returned to this foundational design and reinterpreted it in sculpted solid oak, introducing a new material depth and warmth to the original concept. That reimagining reaffirmed the vitality of the Cloud form and reflected the artist’s ongoing dialogue with his earlier work.
This 2012 prototype remains a singular and significant piece—both in its material honesty and its role in shaping the artist’s formal vocabulary. Unique and signed, the Cloud armchair stands as a compelling intersection of furniture and sculpture, experimentation and refinement. -
