Description
Although, he was an American, William Spratling is known as the Father of Modern Mexican Silver. This pair of monumental sterling silver and ebony candlesticks, were produced by William Spratling in the 1960’s. They have the Spratling Silver mark inlaid in the bottom of the wood base. These candlesticks showcase the strong Colonial detailing that William Sprawling often referenced in his many silver designs. Known for his furniture, tableware, flatware and jewelry, he often combined his hand crafted silver pieces with shell, copper and native Mexican woods and gemstones. William Spratling’s unique blending of traditional Mexican Colonial and Pre-Columbian designs with modern forms have created a place for him amongst the Masters of 20th Century Modern Silver world wide. Numerous books have been written either by or about him and even a film, “The Man From New Orleans”, was made about William Spratling in 1948.
