James Suzuki

Japanese, 1932

James Hiroshi Suzuki, a luminary in Color Field painting, draws inspiration from the profound legacies of artistic giants like Clyfford Still, Mark Rothko, and Barnett Newman. Following his initial training in Japan under the tutelage of Yoshio Markino, Suzuki embarked on a transformative journey to the United States at the age of 19 to pursue his passion for art.

Upon his arrival, Suzuki honed his craft at esteemed institutions such as the Portland School of Fine Arts in Maine and the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, DC. Throughout his academic pursuits, he showcased his burgeoning talent in exhibitions at prominent New York galleries, including the esteemed Graham Gallery.

Suzuki's academic career paralleled his artistic evolution, as he imparted his knowledge and expertise to aspiring artists. His teaching tenure included positions at the University of California, Berkeley, the California College of Arts and Crafts, and the University of California, Davis, among others. Notably, Suzuki's enduring commitment to education extended to his role as a lecturer at California State University in Sacramento for nearly three decades.

In his formative years in America, Suzuki's artistic exploration embraced impressionist and abstract styles, with a keen focus on the evocative colors of the natural world. His serene compositions echo the influence of traditional Japanese and Korean painters, manifesting in hues that evoke the expansive vistas of farmland - from the tranquil blues of the sky to the rich browns of the earth. Reflecting on the essence of Japanese-born artists, Suzuki once articulated, "...most of our abstraction is a nature abstraction," encapsulating the profound connection between his art and the natural world.

Through his unwavering dedication to his craft and his profound understanding of the interplay between color and emotion, James Hiroshi Suzuki continues to leave an indelible mark on the world of Color Field painting, forging a path that honors tradition while embracing innovation.
