Kroehler Mfg. Co.
American
Discover the rich history of Kroehler Furniture, a renowned furniture brand with a legacy dating back to 1902. Founded by Peter E. Kroehler, the company initially specialized in wooden lounge chairs and upholstered furniture. After rebuilding its facilities following a tornado in 1913, the company was renamed Kroehler Manufacturing Co. and quickly expanded its operations across the United States.
Throughout the mid-20th century, Kroehler became one of the largest furniture manufacturers in the country. With annual sales exceeding $20 million in the 1940s, the company employed several hundred men and women in the Chicago area. By the 1960s, Kroehler employed nearly 8,000 people nationwide, achieving annual revenues surpassing $100 million.
Although the company faced challenges in the 1970s and eventually closed its historic Naperville factory in 1978, it continued to manufacture furniture under the Kroehler name. In 1981, Kroehler was acquired by the ATR Group of Northbrook, eventually leading to the sale of the company.
In the early 2000s, furniture bearing the Kroehler name was produced by two unrelated companies, one located in North Carolina and the other in Ontario, Canada. Despite the changes over the years, Kroehler's commitment to quality and innovation remains a cornerstone of its brand.
