Abstract Expressionist Diptych by Hilda O'Connell, 1965
-
Description
A stellar example of Hilda O'Connell's early work dated 1965. This generously sized diptych features two larger than life historical figures; their identity becomes increasingly evident as the piece is viewed a bit closer. O'Connell medium is an assemblage of paint and found material and through layers the subject matter is formed. Deep earth tones are reminiscent of a palette from another era, refreshing to see today. With every view of this piece comes a new discovery whether it is a material or a gesture. At almost 8' tall O'Connell's diptych completely immerses you.
Hilda O'Connell (1934) graduated from Pratt Institute in 1956 and received her MFA at Yale University in 1969. In the 1950's she resided in a 10th Street apartment neighbouring Milton Resnick and adjacent to the studios of Willem de Kooning and Esteban Vincente. Diplodocus Films produced a short film showcasing the artist titled "Hilda" and was featured in the Tribeca Film Festival. O'Connell currently lives and works in Manhattan. -
