Harris Rubin was founded in 1990. Since I can remember, I have made things, tinkered, built, painted, drawn, photographed, and studied art, design, history, music, nature.

There are many tributaries that contribute to the “river” of the work that comes out of Harris Rubin - clarity of design, the materials, and the finishes. Each tributary contributes to the pieces that we make.

Design: What is good design? There is no single answer. I sense it, but cannot describe it, and it is a subjective thing.  In my work, I try to design pieces with clean, classic lines and shapes. I try to design pieces that will be beautiful today, and ten years from now. And, I try to design work that will fit into the context of many types of interior spaces. There are influences in the work: Dutch & Danish modern, Asian, Shaker, Czech Cubism, and the work of 20th Century sculptors such as Brancusi, David Smith, Donald Judd. The pieces can be mashups of many influences, but are ultimately conceived to be clean and clear distillations of them.

Materials matter. I select every board that goes into our wood pieces, carefully choosing the grain, the color, the pattern. We strive to bring out the internal nature of each material, letting it speak for itself, while using our finishing to highlight the qualities within. Our work is tactile, and must be good to the touch, and the eye.

All of our work is made here. We are a crew of four that has worked together for many years. The design and craftsmanship are done with care and love.
