John Dickinson, Hand-Carved Chair, USA, 1969

Price Upon Request
  • Description
Created in 1969 as a prototype this carved chair in exaggerated classical style, epitomizes Dickinson’s love of form and fantasy. Lending his love of the ancient world with 20th Century style. The chair is carved to resemble upholstery, with hints of ancient Egypt, China and Greece, in its unique and sculptural design. Only two of these chairs were made. This prototype chair and its mate were too expensive to put into production, however the form was used as the prototype for the upholstered chairs he would do on commission.

Pictured on page 231 of “Modern Americana” published by Rizzoli. The chair is shown in Dickinson’s Pacific Heights, San Francisco firehouse home.

Provenance: Estate of Carlene Safdie, longtime friend and heir to Dickinson’s rarest designs and personal collection.
