French Neoclassical Ormolu Mounted Mahogany Bureau Plat, 19th Century

Description
This inordinately fine bureau plat from the last quarter of the 19th century is a powerful and commanding form. The writing surface is so rich and attractive with a century of light wear and use stained into the cognac leather, a beautiful gilt tooling framing the edges while anthemions highlight the spandrels. Writing slides withdraw from either side to enlarge the surface when necessary. A pair of small drawers on either side flank a single central drawer, this mirrored on the reverse of the desk with faux-drawers; all drawers are expertly joined with crisp hand dovetailing in the oak secondary woods, a precise group of structures that slide in and out of the desk with ease. The bronze mounts throughout are exceptional, each finely chiseled and finished. The body is raised over tapered legs of solid mahogany terminating in simple brass sabots.
A work of excellence and richness, crafted in materials of the highest quality with colors that strike a flawless balance between the elements, it is an exquisite acquisition for the classical study.

Condition Report:
Some cracking in veneers in corners around the top. Old and likely original leather writing surface with age appropriate wear. Includes original keys. Left upper drawer (when seated) with a small patch to veneer. Light surface wear. -
