John Gould
British, 1804 - 1881
John Gould (1804-1881) was a British ornithologist, artist, and naturalist. He was an early pioneer in the field of bird study and is renowned for his work on birds of the United Kingdom. He studied the birds of Europe, parts of North America, South Africa, and Australia. He published over 300 books, monographs, and articles on birds and related topics. His illustrations of birds are regarded as some of the finest ever made and have been used by scientists and birders ever since. He also wrote about mammals, reptiles, and fishes.
