Striking Pair of “Astosia” Night Tables in Birch by Axel Einar Hjorth
-
Description
Striking and upbeat pair of “Astosia” night tables by Axel Einar Hjorthm introduced in 1935 during his tenure as chief designer and architect for Nordiska Kompaniet, Stockholm, Sweden’s most exclusive, and arguably its most important, at the time. Functionalist (the Nordic version of International Modernism) in style, yet in Hjorth’s capable hands, anything but bland or clinical, the tables consist of rectangular cabinets with a square footprint in Baltic birch in a rich brown stain (preserved during their expert restoration), each with a book nook and cabinet for storage, and having feet, handle, and inset bands at top and bottom in steel and inset tops glazed in vibrant aqua tones. NK metal labels.
