Description
A very fine quality English George III period serpentine fronted chest of drawers executed in selected faded sabicu wood, the shaped sides being in mahogany, the drawers, top and feet being inlaid with ebony, the drawers retaining all the original lacquered swan neck handles and the chest supported on the original shaped bracket feet.
This chest is of the highest quality with very fine design and timbers and has been attributed by Jeremy Ltd. to Thomas Chippendale. Although obviously a speculative attribution many attributes of this chest do conform to the work of Chippendale, including the unique shaping of the feet, the use of ebony banding and inlay at such an early time and trade mark lacquered swan-neck handles.
Elements of the design of the present piece are known in documented Chippendale commissions at Paxton, Aske Hall, Mercham-le-Hatch and Wilton House, and the present piece is of similar quality.
Provenance:
Acquired c. 1946 from the Norton family, Birtles Hall, Macklesfield by Jeremy Ltd.
