Painting of Sheep in Barn by Cornelis van Leemputten (Belgian, 1841-1902)

Description
A warm scene of a small flock of sheep gathered together in the cool of the barn during the afternoon, it is a vivid work with seven sheep eating and resting while chickens search for food in the hay scattered along the dirt floor. Somewhat typical of paintings by Cornelis (or Cornelius) van Leemputten, it is a work entirely devoid of Romanticism, depicting the scene objectively with the dirt and grime expected in a barn; the animals are portrayed with exactness, their expressions natural and a reflection of Leemputten's observations. It is signed in the lower right corner C. van Leemputten in his typical near-cursive script. The painting was executed in oil on canvas, but later was laid on a heavy artist panel, probably to strengthen the brittle canvas in light of the craquelure. It is housed in a later frame with a brass plaque reading C. van Leemputten.

Condition Report:
All-over craquelure. Difficult to examine under UV due to flare of fresh varnish; appears to have a repaired tear to the right of the left-most rooster; small loss and repaired tear by signature; canvas was laid down on artist panel, likely in the 80s when the backing paper was applied. Surface remains clean and vibrant. Contemporary frame with wear as shown. - More Information
