    Watercolor and gouache on paper of “La Crémaillère” located in Montmartre, Paris. Signed lower right, H. Gasser, Paris. 20th century. Circa 1950-1960. Condition: Excellent. In Art Deco style stacked water gilded goldleaf frame in mint condition. Museum glass. Overall framed measurements 13.75 by 11.5 inches.

    “La Crémaillère”
    Originally the building was a shop from the year 1900, but in 1926 the store was purchased by Charles and Antoine Marino, and although they kept the original woodwork and beams, they turned the place into a restaurant and a cabaret venue.

    They chose the name La Cremaillere 1900 and it soon became one of the most fashionable places in the area for musicians, singers, dancers, even chess players, artists and lovers, to mingle, enjoy the entertainment and the food on offer.

    Henry Martin Gasser (1909–1981). An artist distinguished by one hundred awards nationwide and included in sixty museum collections, Gasser is the sleeping giant of the twentieth century. He was a prolific artist and active leader of the Newark art school, heading the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Arts and authoring seven instructional art books. The artist’s skill as both an oil painter and watercolorist and demonstrate the full range of his talent, including industrial scenes, city views, New England harbor towns, and snow-covered villages. Gasser was an American painter in every sense. Through persistence and a He turned humble scenes of urban American life in the mid-twentieth century into extraordinary works of art that were widely praised by the art world.
