Stig Sandqvist
Swedish
Stig Sandqvist (1920-2013) was a Swedish designer and entrepreneur who is best known for co-founding the furniture company Sandqvist & Wiksell in 1953. Sandqvist was born in Skellefteå, Sweden and studied at the Konstfack School of Arts, Crafts, and Design in Stockholm.
Sandqvist & Wiksell was known for producing high-quality, modern furniture in a variety of styles, from Scandinavian modern to more traditional designs. Sandqvist was the lead designer for the company, and his designs were noted for their simplicity, functionality, and elegance.
Some of Sandqvist's most iconic designs include the "Karmstol" chair, which was inspired by traditional Swedish peasant chairs, and the "Galax" chair, which featured a unique, curvilinear design.
In addition to his work with Sandqvist & Wiksell, Sandqvist also designed furniture for other companies and served as a design consultant for several Swedish municipalities. He was widely recognized for his contributions to Swedish design, and in 2006 he was awarded the prestigious Prince Eugen Medal for outstanding contributions to Swedish culture.
