  • Description
    Crafted mostly of poplar in both primary and secondary woods, the exterior of this chest retains the early red-wash and overall faux-grain painting in the salmon surface. This is delightfully worn and rubbed to result in an attractive surface patination throughout.

    Typical of joinery seen in central Pennsylvania during the period, the top is edged by applied ends with three broad tenons locking these on; the front edge is attached with a routed grooved-edge and affixed with broad tapered wooden pins. All have integral cove molding.

    The drawers are beautifully dovetailed with crisp pins and bevelled drawer bottoms that are set in grooved sides. Both drawers retain original stamped oval brass hardware and early (possibly original) keyhole escutcheons. The top opens on original wrought iron hinges to reveal a tidy interior with a lidded till on the left.

    The entire chest rests over original ogival feet with triangular brackets set at an angle the front feet instead of the more common quarter-blocking.

    Measurements: 29 5/8" H x 50 1/4" W x 22 3/4" D

    Condition Report:
    Heavily worn painted surface with remnants of early and likely original red wash and red pigment throughout. Loss upper left edge of chest (partially hidden by the closed lid). Loss around lock of left drawer (facing), missing locks and no key available. Original feet.
