Description
Pair of Gerdau armchairs in caviuna wood from Brazil 1930s.
This pair of armchairs is playful and modest, but with strong geometric lines in Art Deco style. The bentwood armrest go full circle, down to the legs and up to support the backrest, creating the main support structure of the chair. Four short bent legs lift the chairs up from the ground. The seat is distinctively shaped with bentwood and the backrest is tilted back adding comfort to the chair. The wood has a few visible joints and has aged beautifully.
About the designer:
In 1908 the small ‘Fábrica de Móveis Navegantes’, in Porto Alegre, was bought by German businessman Johannes Gerdau and his son Walter. Walter, the manager of the business, started the fabrication of bentwood furniture, in the Viennese style developed by the Austrian Michel Thonet in the second half of the 19th century. Although the furniture of the Gerdau family can be found in many places in Brazil, the Gerdau designs have remained a bit of an unknown legacy. -
