Emilio Grau Sala
Spanish, 1911 - 1975
Emilio Grau Sala (1911–1975) was a Catalan-Spanish painter celebrated for his vibrant colorism and lyrical figuration. Born in Barcelona, he briefly studied at the School of Fine Arts there before largely developing his style independently. He moved to Paris in the early 1930s, became part of the “École de Paris” milieu, and created elegant scenes of interiors, women, urban life and horse-racing tracks—rendered in oils, watercolours and pastels. Over his lifetime he also worked as an illustrator and theatrical designer. On returning to Barcelona in the 1960s, he remained committed to his graceful figurative vision until his death in 1975.
