Description
An Egyptian Revival armchair attributed to English designer Christopher Dresser, related to carved mahogany sofa designed by Dresser for the Bushloe House in Leicestershire in 1880.
The seat back takes the form of a stylized female figure, likely representing the Egyptian goddess Isis; her headdress and necklace feature fine inlaid geometric patterning in bone, abalone and wood. Her outstretched winged arms, with carved stylized feathers, form the arms of the chair.
This chair was purportedly used in the interior set dressing in Meet Me in St. Louis (1944). -
