Chinese Scholar Rock in Metal Form on Display Stand

Sold Sold
  • Description
On offer is a Chinese scholar stone (Gongshi or Spirited stone) made of a metal alloy (likely a white bronze with copper, tin and zinc), circa Qing Dynasty. The small but condensed form is modeled after Yingde stone, originated from Guangdong province in Southern China. The wrinkled sculptural form with its intricate furrowed surface best embody the traditional Chinese ink painting of a mountainous landscape in far distance.
The highly priced scholar rocks with their strange formation has long been revered by Chinese literati dating back to Tang/Song Dynasty. Typically formed through geologic processes, these rocks beguile connoisseurs with their dynamic form and the interplay of positive and negative space. The exodus of energy and enigma is mediated upon and interpreted by the individual viewer.
Since the start of collecting these spirited stones, artisans have produced facsimiles of naturally occurring rocks in various man-made materials, including jade, glass, ceramic and metal. The metal form was less common until in Qing dynasty. It enjoys a revival as a contemporary art in recent years through the work by Chinese artist Zhan Wang, whose work can be found in many major American museum. These objects are more than decorative, they reflect a cultivated endeavor to contain the nature in one's study.
