Description
A large mosaic panel artwork representing the Bicentennial Celebration in New York harbor on the evening of July 4, 1976. A memorable evening throughout the United States and particularly in New York.
The scale of the artwork executed on a 4 by 8 foot panel gives it a great presence.
The use of thousands of many different types of tiles and five different colored grouts to create a tapestry of New York landmarks which include the George Washington Bridge, the Citicorp, the World Trade Center, One Broad and the Statue of Liberty.
A reference to an iconic 70s event is the modeling of the head of the Statue of Liberty after the head of C-3PO from the 1977 movie Star Wars. I have never seen the Statue of Liberty as a Star Wars character before.
This impressive artwork was commissioned for a reception area at a New York sanatorium in Dutchess or Sullivan County just north of Manhattan. The facility was closed during the down turn of the early 80s and the mosaic was removed.
The mosaic is in good condition except for the missing tiles. -
