    "Congo Head" sculpture, designed by Waylande Gregory in Cleveland Ohio in 1930 and made by the Winterich Pottery.
    Gregory sculpted human and animal figures in eclectic styles ranging from realistic to highly stylized, a seen in this ceramic sculpture. It depicts the head of an African woman wearing a hair comb and earrings, a truly elegant work by one of the most important ceramic sculptors in America.
    In 1931 he became an "artist-in-residence" at Cranbrook Academy of Art, now knows as the American Bauhaus. He was named director of the New Jersey WPA and began work of the monumental light Dispelling Darkness fountain, which still stands in Roosevelt Park in Edison New Jersey.
    This sculpture turn up in several early 1930's Hollywood motion picture as stage props.
