Charles Francis Delamarche
French
Charles-François Delamarche (1740–1817) was a French geographer, cartographer, and map publisher who was active during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. He was born in Paris, France, and inherited his father's mapmaking business, which he expanded and developed into a successful enterprise.
Delamarche specialized in producing maps, atlases, and globes. He was known for his attention to detail, accuracy, and the high quality of his cartographic work. Delamarche's maps often featured intricate engravings, decorative elements, and precise geographical information.
One of his significant contributions was the publication of the "Atlas de la Géographie" in 1786. This atlas consisted of a series of maps covering various regions of the world, providing detailed representations of political boundaries, topography, and geographical features. It was highly regarded for its cartographic excellence.
In addition to maps and atlases, Delamarche also produced globes, including terrestrial and celestial globes. These globes were crafted with precision and were used for educational purposes, particularly in schools and universities.
Delamarche's mapmaking business remained successful, and his work continued to be influential even after his death. His successors, such as Felix Delamarche and Charles-François Delamarche II, continued the family's cartographic tradition.
Today, antique maps, atlases, and globes bearing the name Charles-François Delamarche are sought after by collectors and map enthusiasts. They represent the artistry and accuracy of cartography during the late 18th and early 19th centuries and provide valuable historical insights into the understanding of the world at that time.
